I was so excited when Krysten contacted me with an idea that she had for their next family session. I had photographed them all together last fall at a beautiful conservation area, but this time she had a little something different in mind! Their family-owned concrete business has been in her husband’s family for over 60 years at the same location and soon, they will be relocating to another part of the city. The yard brings back many memories as Mike has spent his whole life there, from the time he was just a toddler in his Grandfather’s arms. Krysten asked me to join them at the yard with their two boys to photograph them together and capture some memories of their own before this historic location is converted into something new.
I pulled up in my van and followed them in. There were many different buildings, structures, and lots of trucks and equipment all around. The boys jumped out of their vehicle and immediately started running around. I could tell this place meant “fun” to them and they were excited to be there.
The boys hardly stood still for a second the whole time we were there. They climbed up into the cab of one of the cement trucks, ran from one place to another, and jumped up and down while holding their parents’ hands because they were just bubbling from the inside out! The only time they stood still was when Dad pulled one of the trucks out. They stood quietly, holding Mama’s hand, because I’m sure they’ve learned the rules about staying clear of moving equipment on the yard.
It had rained the night before and there were some big puddles on the yard, taunting them throughout our whole session. Finally at the end, they got the green light to go ahead and give them a splash. They ran through them, around them, and jumped together right in the middle. I’m pretty sure they had the best morning EVER!
Thank you so much for inviting me this spot, which means so much to your family. I had so much fun hanging out with you all again and seeing the pure joy on the boys’ face totally made my day!! The location may change, but your company will be in your family for generations and will always be a huge part of your boys’ lives and a source of many fond memories for years to come.
